Roofing in Satellite Beach, FL

Satellite Beach was built for the missile program. Brothers Percy and Herbert Hedgecock bought the land in 1956, put up houses for the engineers and Air Force families working at the Cape, and the town incorporated in August 1957 on a vote of 56 to 1. The streets were named for planets and rockets. The housing is mostly what they built: 1950s through 1970s single-story concrete block homes on the strip between the Atlantic and the Banana River, plus condominiums along A1A and infill rebuilds since 2000. Most of the original houses are on their third or fourth roof, and standing-seam metal has taken over from shingle on the ocean blocks.

The island here is narrow enough that a house gets ocean spray on one side and river air on the other, and fasteners, flashing, and drip edge corrode years ahead of the mainland. Matthew ran offshore on October 7, 2016. Irma's winds crossed the beachside on September 10 and 11, 2017. Nicole's eye passed over Brevard on November 10, 2022, and the surf cut the dunes along the city's beach parks.

Satellite Beach roofing, salt first

Rusted drip edge and failing fasteners under shingle that still looks fine is the common roof repair here. A 1960s block home due for its next roof is a metal roofing conversation with coastal-grade hardware in the scope. A roof replacement on the island is permitted under a higher design wind speed than the mainland, and the fastening schedule is inspected.

Where to call in Satellite Beach

Satellite Beach runs its own building department, and re-roofs inside the city go through City Hall on Cassia Boulevard rather than through the county. The city's own history page tells the Hedgecock story. The north end of town borders Patrick Space Force Base, home of Space Launch Delta 45, which still supplies a large share of the homeowners.
